Late august 2010, several fires simultaneously occurred in the south of France near the towns of Fontanès, Villeveyrac (Hérault department), Cassis and La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône department). Over 3000 hectares of scrubland have been destroyed, hundreds of people were evacuated and the motorway A50 was cut between Aubagne and Le Beausset to facilitate the movement of rescue vehicles and the thousand firefighters that have been deployed.

SERTIT, a remote sensing and image processing service was created in 1986 within the ENSPS, Strasbourg, a graduate Engineering School. SERTIT’s vocation is to format data and extract information from data produced by Earth Observation systems. SERTIT is also specialized in crisis remote sensing applications. It is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and has been contracted (since 2004) by the French Space Agency (CNES) to produce added value EO derived products, within the framework of the International Charter ‘Space and Major Catastrophes’ and the european program "Services and Applications For Emergency Response" (SAFER).
